MealShift is a platform that connects restaurants and takeaways with food delivery drivers with an easy to use mobile app. Restaurants post ‘Shifts’ whenever they need delivery drivers; whether it’s for busy periods, holiday cover or business as usual. Restaurants specify the date, time and hours required for the Shift or request a driver for ASAP. Our pool of high-quality self-employed drivers then apply to these Shifts and the restaurant selects a driver to hire. Drivers are contracted and paid by restaurants for the specified number of hours in the Shift and for each delivery, without paying any fees or commission. We also offer restaurants their own branded ordering app, allowing them to sell directly to their customers, along with marketing to support this. All of this helps them retain control of their business, avoiding the heavy commission fees charged by other food delivery platforms on each order.

Nope! The majority of our drivers use their own vehicle for deliveries and are responsible for their own insurance. However, if you wanted to provide your own vehicle for your driver to use, you would need to have ‘Business Use’ insurance that covers Food Delivery. If you are not sure where to get this, we recommend using Zego, who specialise in this type of insurance.

There is no cost to the restaurant for using MealShift to hire delivery drivers – we don’t charge any commission or fees. You only pay for the hours and number of drops completed by your driver. If you would like to take advantage of our branded ordering app offering to help you connect with and sell directly to your customers, we can create a customised, branded app for your restaurant to use for as long as you’d like, for as little as £49 per month

All drivers booked through our platform have provided valid insurance cover for the time you hired them for their delivery vehicle. So, as independent contractors, by accepting to do your Shift through our platform, it’s their responsibility to ensure they are fully insured for your job. If you are providing the delivery vehicle, you are responsible for insuring the vehicle appropriately.

As a restaurant, you pay the delivery driver per hour and per drop. The rate depends on the delivery vehicle as follows – you will have the option to specify which vehicle type you’d accept for the Shift when you create it:

Yes, you can hire a driver to use your own vehicle to make deliveries. If you would like to do this, you will need to have ‘Business Use’ insurance that covers Food Delivery. If you are not sure where to get this, we recommend using Zego, who specialises in this type of insurance and offer Pay-As-You-Go Insurance cover.

The minimum Shift duration is one hour. The duration can be altered in in-crements of 30 minutes when creating the Shift.

Nope! You’ll never have to pay for fuel unless you are providing your own vehicle for drivers to use, but most of our drivers use their own vehicles, so are responsible for covering their own fuel costs.

You can hire a driver for ‘ASAP’ or for any time in the future up to 1 month.

For ASAP bookings – Restaurant can cancel or reschedule after 5 minutes of hiring the driver if they haven’t received a notification that the driver is on the way. If the restaurant cancels while the driver is on the way, they will be charged the driver’s hourly rate for the first hour of the Shift. If the restaurant cancels when the driver arrives at the restaurant to start the Shift, the restaurant will be charged for 50% of the total Shift hours, with a minimum of 1 hour to be paid. For example, if the Shift is for 4 hours, the restaurant will be charged for 2 hours. If the Shift is for 1.5 hours, the restaurant will be charged for 1 hour. If the driver is on the way, the restaurant can still cancel or reschedule free of charge if the courier is not onsite after 30 minutes of the time of the booking.

For scheduled bookings – The restaurant can cancel, without a cancellation fee, at least 24 hours before the scheduled shift start time. If the booking is made within 24 hours, the restaurant can cancel, free of charge, 12 hours before the start time of the shift. If the restaurant cancels less than 12 hours before the start time and before the driver is on the way, they will be charged 25% of the total hours’ cost. If they cancel after the driver is on the way, they will be charged 50% of the total hours’ cost. If the restaurant cancels after the driver is onsite, they will be charged for the total hours booked but not for the estimated drops.
